Project Description

Describe how your project addresses the District Goals?
"Our project addresses the goal of engagement by having eighth grade buddies work with fifth graders on two different projects that include the use of technology.

I hear, and I forget.  I see, and I remember.  I do, and I understand.

Students will be actively engaged in a service learning project that uses technology to promote a positive culture at HMS.  They will be learning by doing!"

We are going to expand our current uses of technology with Yarmouth students beyond or existing practices by having 8th graders and 5th graders working with programs such as Video Cue, Keynote, Wallwisher etc. We have chosen this project because it reaches the bigger goal of the life role outcomes of Responsible and Involved Citizens, Effective Communicators, Self-directed Learners, Effective Problem Solvers and Critical Thinkers, Collaborative Worker,s and Quality Producer.  This project also takes the 8th Grade Buddy activity to a much higher level.  It will engage the kids in purposeful play and promote creativity.

Describe the time frame of your project. (When?)
Our project will begin at the end of September when the 8th grade buddies will teach the fifth graders how to use a draw program. It will end in June when we will share and celebrate all of the PSAs that have been created.

Describe the student activities that will be affiliated with your project. (How?)  Timeline
"1.  September - 8th graders will teach 5th graders how to use a draw program to create their monsters for the ""Monster Project.""
2.  October - 5th and 8th graders will share the monsters that were created.
3.  November- Students will be introduced to the Public Service Announcement project.  The introduction will include a discussion of the Life Role Outcomes, core values, the purpose of the project (to create a positive school culture through the use of technology), and some guidelines on how to create powerful PSAs.
4. December - May - Students will go to blog that has several PSAs embedded to see examples.  They will also be introduced to Wallwisher as a place to post questions to others when they are stuck and need help.  The students will be the experts that help each other solve problems and create PSAs using Video Cue Pro, Keynote, Google presentation etc.  During these meetings there will be mini-lessons and work time.
5. June - celebrate and gather feedback for improvement!

How will you know that you have increased student engagement and/or individualization?
The uniqueness of the PSAs and the activity level during the work time will be the best indicators of student engagement.  The choices they make throughout the project from which topic to address to how to deliver their message will be individualized to meet their needs and passion.  (Year end celebration at YPAC show PSA's possibly give rewards)
